From 30 June to 02 July 2008, Mr. Zhang Yu, Deputy Director of the Zhejiang Solid Waste Management and Supervision Center and ERM long-term expert Dr. Jochen Vida were invited to take part in the 2nd planning workshop of the bilateral Sino-EU Hazardous Waste Management Project in Lanzhou. Other participants were experts and staff from the implementing agencies of the Sino-EU programme, namely the National Solid Waste Management Center and the city-level EPB's of Jingzhou and Lanzhou from the Chinese side as well as the consulting firms 'Senternovem' (Netherlands) and 'Boku' (Austria) from the EU side.

The participants discussed new activities in the areas of 'Waste Information Systems' (WIS) and 'Performance Assessment Systems' (PAS). To this end, Mr. Zhang Yu introduced the internet-based 'Solid Waste Management Information System' developed by the EECZ Programme, which has been operational in Zhejiang since January 2008. Valuable practice based experience was shared among the experts with regard to the development of such systems in China. Subsequently, the ERM long-term expert presented the findings of the on-site waste investigation campaign that was conducted in seventeen hazardous waste generating enterprises in Zhejiang. He addressed the shortcomings discovered by the investigations and made recommendations for improving the situation. Fruitful discussions were held with regard to the future HWM strategy for China.
