From 22 to 24 July, EECZ conducted a three-day workshop in Hangzhou on hazardous waste landfill design, construction and operation. Approximately 50 staff from design agencies, construction companies, operators and regulators, namely the provincial- and city-level local solid waste management centres took part in the workshop. ERM short-term expert Mr. Manfred Koenig gave mainly insight into practice related aspects of landfill design, construction and operation based on his experiences in Germany whereas Dr. Vida, the ERM long-term expert with EECZ, covered legal requirements of landfill operation. CIM expert Mr. Claus Schmidt joined for a session in which he shared his observations made during landfill related assignments in China. During the interactive sessions lively discussions were held between the audience and the experts as to which and how experiences made in Germany with regard to landfill design, construction, operation and management can be transferred to Zhejiang. It became clear that the successful development of hazardous waste landfill sites in Zhejiang poses a challenge to the stakeholders in all aspects such as technical, managerial, regulatory and economical.
