Five landfill sites located in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Quzhou, Taizhou and Wenzhou are slated to receive Zhejiang’s hazardous waste for final disposal. All landfill sites are in different stages of development, ranging from site identification (Wenzhou) to operation (Ningbo). Many issues still require clarification with regard to design, construction and operation of these sites. Therefore, the EEZC Programme invited ERM short-term expert Mr. Manfred Koenig for a 3 week assignment in Zhejiang providing assistance to the various stakeholders involved in the development of these sites.
In the time period between 7 to 18 July, ERM-experts Mr. Koenig and Dr. Vida accompanied by ZSWMSC Deputy Directors Mr. Zhang Yu (1st week) and Mr. Dong Feng (2nd week) visited the landfill sites in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Quzhou and Taizhou for technical discussions with designers, construction companies, operators and local Solid Waste Management Centers. Mr. Koenig gave mainly insight into practice related aspects of landfill design and construction based on his experiences in Germany.
From 22 to 24 July, EECZ conducted a three-day workshop for 50 participating staff in Hangzhou on hazardous waste landfill design, construction and operation.
